How to Update Your Phone for Seniors

Keeping your phone updated is the single best thing you can do to stay safe, fix bugs, and help your phone run smoothly. Here's how to do it.

Why Updates Matter

Phone software updates do three important things:

Updates are free and safe. They don't delete your photos or contacts.

⚡ Before You Start

📱 Updating an iPhone

  1. 1
Open Settings. Tap the grey gear icon on your home screen.
  2. 2
Tap "General." It's in the first group of options.
  3. 3
Tap "Software Update." Your iPhone will check for available updates.
  4. 4
If an update is available, you'll see a blue button that says "Download and Install." Tap it.
  5. 5
Enter your passcode if asked, then tap "Install Now" or "Install Tonight."
  6. 6
Your phone will restart. This is normal. It may show an Apple logo and a progress bar for a few minutes. Don't worry — it's working.
  7. 7
When it restarts, enter your passcode. Your phone is now updated!
💡 Automatic Updates: You can set your iPhone to update automatically overnight. Go to Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates and turn on both switches.

🤖 Updating an Android Phone

The steps vary slightly depending on your phone brand (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.).

  1. 1
Open Settings. Tap the gear icon in your app list, or swipe down from the top and tap the gear.
  2. 2
Scroll down and tap "System," "About Phone," or "Software Information." The name varies by brand.
  3. 3
Tap "System Update," "Software Update," or "Check for Updates."
  4. 4
Tap "Download" or "Install" if an update is available.
  5. 5
Your phone will restart and show a progress screen. This is normal — let it finish on its own.
💡 Samsung phones: Go to Settings → Software Update → Download and Install.

Common Update Problems

  1. 1
"Not enough storage" message. You need to free up space. Delete some unused apps or old photos to make room. Then try the update again.
  2. 2
Update is stuck or frozen. Wait 30 minutes — sometimes updates look frozen but are still working. If it's truly stuck, hold the power button and restart the phone.
  3. 3
Says "Your software is up to date." Great — nothing to do! Your phone already has the latest version.
⚠️ Note: Very old phones (more than 7 years old) may stop receiving updates eventually. If your phone says updates are no longer available, consider speaking with a family member about upgrading for security reasons.
