How to Connect to Wi-Fi for Seniors
A simple, step-by-step guide for connecting your phone, tablet, or computer to a Wi-Fi network — written in plain language.
What You'll Need
Before you start, find your Wi-Fi password. It's usually written on a sticker on your router (the small box that provides internet). The password is also sometimes called a "network key" or "WPA key."
📱 On an iPhone or iPad
-
1Open Settings. Find the grey gear icon on your home screen. Tap it.
-
2Tap "Wi-Fi" near the top of the Settings list.
-
3Make sure Wi-Fi is turned ON. The switch should be green. If it's grey, tap it to turn it on.
-
4Choose your network. You'll see a list of nearby Wi-Fi networks. Tap on your home network's name.
-
5Type your password. Enter your Wi-Fi password carefully. Uppercase and lowercase letters matter. Then tap "Join."
-
6Look for the checkmark. A blue checkmark will appear next to your network name when you're connected.
🤖 On an Android Phone or Tablet
Android phones look a little different depending on the brand (Samsung, Google, etc.), but the steps are similar.
-
1Open Settings. Find the gear icon in your app list or swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon.
-
2Tap "Wi-Fi," "Connections," or "Network & Internet." The exact name depends on your phone brand.
-
3Turn Wi-Fi on. The switch at the top should be blue or green. Tap it if it's turned off.
-
4Tap your network name from the list of available Wi-Fi networks.
-
5Enter your password and tap "Connect."
-
6Wait a moment. You'll see the word "Connected" appear under your network name when it works.
💻 On a Windows Computer
-
1Look at the bottom-right corner of your screen. You'll see a small Wi-Fi icon (fan shape) in the taskbar.
-
2Click the Wi-Fi icon. A panel will slide out showing nearby networks.
-
3Click your network name from the list.
-
4Click "Connect." Check "Connect automatically" if you want it to connect on its own next time.
-
5Type your password and press Enter or click "Next."
Wi-Fi Not Working? Try These Fixes
-
1Restart your router. Unplug it from the wall, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes before trying to reconnect.
-
2Check your password. Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Double-check that capital letters and numbers are correct.
-
3Forget the network and reconnect. In your Wi-Fi settings, tap the network name and choose "Forget." Then connect again from scratch.
-
4Restart your device. Turn your phone, tablet, or computer fully off and back on.
